Approved. Especially if you do an ascending lick that is sort of leading to your main licks, building up tension and excitement. And! It saves you from being faster and more accurate at playing! I think the first time I paid attention to double picked lick was as a teenager in a band when the other guitarist started his solo with a lick like I described. I was stunned "why didn't I come up with that, it sounds so strong and cool". Like it also had more musicality to it because long notes didn't quite fit there, but it allowed the listener to grab onto the melodic line better than just shredding through. And it fit the pace of the song better than being very fastly progressing. It was just spot on like a nose to the face.
